Jugibari Rural Tourism Project

In the quiet landscape of Khumtai lies Jugirbari, a wetland paradise spread over nearly 40 acres. Every winter, over 2,000 migratory birds arrive here from faraway regions like Siberia, Mongolia, and Eastern Europe. More than 85 species have been recorded so far, including the bar-headed goose, northern pintail, gadwall, & several varieties of storks and herons.

What makes Jugirbari unique is that it is locally protected and managed by women-led Self Help Groups from nearby villages. No plastic, no loud disturbances, and no commercial construction. The community has taken complete ownership of the space, and continues to preserve it through collective care and traditional wisdom.

The wetland is also famous for its dense blooms of native pink lotus during the season, creating a floating carpet that keeps the water cool, supports biodiversity, and purifies the habitat naturally. It’s a photographer’s dream and a botanist’s classroom.

Bird watchers, nature lovers, students, and eco-conscious travelers will find Jugirbari a rare escape. Bamboo sheds and sitting spaces allow for peaceful observation. There are also locally run eateries serving simple Assamese meals made fresh by the same women's groups who manage the tourism. Clean, slow, and deeply rooted in community effort—Jugirbari is a place where time feels different.
