Captain Jintu Gogoi Memorial

Born in a quiet corner of Khumtai, Captain Jintu Gogoi graduated from the Officers’ Training Academy in Chennai before joining the 17th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles. In June 1999, during the fierce battles of the Kargil War, he led his men in Op Vijay with courage few can imagine. Tasked with clearing enemy positions at Kala Pathar in the Batalik sector, he charged into close combat despite being surrounded, rallying his troops with the regimental war cry “Badri Vishal Lal Ki Jai.” Though gravely injured, he refused to yield and continued fighting until he collapsed. His actions paved the way for further gains and shook the enemy lines.

Posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for supreme bravery and later Assam’s highest gallantry award, the Bir Chilarai Award, Captain Gogoi is remembered as a symbol of fearless service and selfless patriotism

Each year on Kargil Vijay Diwas, residents of Khumtai gather at his Samadhi Kshetra to pay tribute. In 2025, over 300 local volunteers, including youth and veteran groups, took part in a memorial run held in his honour, keeping his legacy alive in the heart of the community
